CEO – Mr. Alhasan Islam Tarawally

Mr. Alhasan Islam Tarawally, is a pioneering entrepreneur from Sierra Leone and CEO of GEC Briquettes. After seeing the harm traditional charcoal has on health and the environment, Tarawally made it his mission to create a cleaner, more sustainable charcoal alternative that can help change lives and save the environment.

Core Problem

According to the World Health Organization, household air pollution from cooking with charcoal kills over 4 million people every year and leaves millions more sick. Traditional charcoal also affects wildlife, negatively affecting the environment and reducing vast swaths of forest.

Our Mission

To mitigate the negative impacts of charcoal while establishing a greener more efficient alternative to charcoal, GEC Briquettes uses agricultural waste (Cassava peels, coconut shells, coffee peels, etc.) and binding ingredients to create domestic briquettes that are as durable and more efficient than traditional charcoal solutions.

Our Journey

Since 2022 we started with 5 employees and produced 1000 cubes per month. Now our business has 15 employees and produces 240,000 cubes per month. It employs a machine-briquette extruder and solar installation to boost production, has been tested by our partners in Spain, and our products have reached over 1000 customers.
